There are several reasons why eight is an important number in rugby.
There are eight people from each side in a scrum and line-out. The number eight position also carries huge responsibility and is pivotal in attacking, defending and carrying the ball forward for their team.
Excitement is building for the host nation’s opening match against Russia on 20 September, which is one of 40 games in the tournament’s opening group phase up until 13 October.
The final takes place on 2 November, with three-times winners New Zealand again the favourites to lift the trophy. England, Wales, Ireland and South Africa are among other fancied teams.
But which number eight will run riot at the Rugby World Cup? Will it be New Zealand’s Kieran Read, Billy Vunipola of England or Ireland’s Jack Conan?
