Earth Day on April 22 aims to harness local action with a global impact. At Refinitiv, we are committed to delivering key sustainability pledges at the heart of our business, including goals to lighten our environmental footprint and increase our community impact.

  1. Earth Day on April 22 seeks to raise awareness of core environmental issues and to highlight the role we can all take in improving the world around us.
  2. As a global citizen with global impact, Earth Day matters to us. Our commitment is demonstrated by three business pledges focusing on carbon emissions, community involvement and sustainable leadership.
  3. Refinitiv’s ESG data, insight and analytics have a big role to play in informing wider discussions and decisions on sustainability.

At Refinitiv we are privileged to do business all across the world, with our suite of products, data, research and analytics used by 400,000 professionals across approximately 190 countries.

These capabilities are developed and delivered by almost 20,000 employees in over 100 locations. Refinitiv is truly global, and as a global citizen with global impact, Earth Day matters to us.

The role of Earth Day on April 22 is to raise awareness of the core environmental issues facing us all, and to highlight the role businesses, individuals, communities and governments can all collectively play to improve the planet.

Our responsibility at Refinitiv to driving sustainable leadership and development is demonstrated by three business pledges, with Earth Day helping us to bring these into focus internally and externally.

1. We will continuously lighten our environmental footprint

Operating as a sustainable and responsible business is core to who we are and what we stand for as an organisation.

We have committed to reducing our annual carbon emissions by an average of 10 percent over the next five years, being powered by 100 percent renewable energy by 2020, and committing to carbon neutrality in the same time-frame.

We’re managing, measuring and lightening our environmental impact – ensuring we have local solutions that aggregate together to deliver our collective targets.

Whether that is through the total elimination of single-use cups on our major sites, looking at our supply chains and recycling practices, or by identifying more efficient energy, lighting or water solutions, these local changes – led by local sustainable action teams – are helping us meet our global targets.

We have committed to reducing our annual carbon emissions by an average of 10 percent over the next five years, being powered by 100 percent renewable energy by 2020, and committing to carbon neutrality in the same time-frame.

2. We will reflect and support the communities we operate in

We are very proud of the collective leadership shown across our business to support our local communities. Volunteering programmes, matching charitable donations and volunteer grants are used by our employees worldwide to support the local causes they are passionate about.

As participants of the United Nations Global Compact we also look to support the UN Sustainable Development Goals, where through active employee participation we can create meaningful societal impact.

Our goal is to double our engagement with community investment programmes this year.

Ensuring Refinitiv is an inclusive workforce is another key aspect to this pledge. This will not only make us a smarter business, by creating more robust and innovative solutions through diverse frames of reference, but will also help us to attract the brightest talent in the future.

After all, people need to see themselves reflected in who we are and believe they can achieve their full potential with us. As part of this pledge, we have committed to a 40 percent goal for women in senior leadership roles by 2020.

3. We will put sustainability at the core of our product offering

Refinitiv data, insights, analytics and research have a big role to play in informing wider discussions and decisions on sustainability. Our recently launched Earth Day Report looks at how companies are performing in this space, using the lens of our ESG research data.

The causes and impacts of climate change are far-reaching, and the report’s findings start to look into this at greater depth.

Expanding our product offering, and fully exploring the value of data for creating a more sustainable world, is something we are proud to be part of. We empower investors to shift towards sustainable finance initiatives and are at the forefront in the fight against financial crime.

Sustainable leadership

Earth Day on 22 April has big ambitions to raise environmental awareness globally and bring the most important topic we all face into sharp focus.

At Refinitiv, we want to show why Earth Day matters, although our commitment to sustainability, and to harnessing local action with global impact, is certainly not limited to just this one day – it’s woven into our DNA.

Sustainable leadership is strategic to Refinitiv’s business model and to our future. We want to continue to do business but, more importantly, to do it the right way and ensure our impact is positive on the world around us.
