Potential foreign investors in Japanese stocks face a language barrier in the #SearchForAlpha. How are Refinitiv tools helping to improve the visibility of companies on the Tokyo Stock Exchange?

  1. Understanding corporate disclosure and analyst research is a significant challenge for potential foreign investors in Japanese stocks.
  2. StarMine and StockReports+ quantify corporate earnings information, price momentum, and textual information to improve the visibility of Japanese stocks.
  3. Using Eikon’s News Monitor app also means news can easily be translated to local languages around the world.

Japan has its fair share of companies on the global stage, such as the conglomerate and WeWork investor SoftBank and established blue-chip companies Toyota and Sony.

They are one of several reasons why the Tokyo Stock Exchange is second only to Shenzhen in terms of its trading volume (in U.S. dollars) among Asian exchanges, based on figures for October 2019 available on Eikon’s Market Share Reporter.

Shenzhen topped the list with 26.3 percent, followed by Tokyo on 22.3 percent and Shanghai with 19 percent. But from the perspective of global investors, the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s actual market share is much higher when excluding China’s domestic A-shares.

The top 10 most heavily traded stocks on the Tokyo Stock Exchange accounted for about 16 percent of its total trading value in 2018, with the top 100 heavily traded stocks representing some 51 percent.

Analysis of monthly data for October also shows that about 50 percent of stocks traded more than US$1 billion a month. It is well known that some blue-chip stocks have enormous liquidity, but there is fairly ample liquidity in other stocks below them.

Little exposure to Japanese stocks

While three-quarters of trading volume on the Tokyo Stock Exchange comes from overseas, it is clear that it is quite a challenge for global investors to obtain information for understanding Japanese stocks.

Analysts only cover about one-third of the 3,800 or so stocks in the Japanese market.

With this in mind, I recently discussed the Japanese stock market at ASEAN-targeted events in Malaysia and Thailand, held in cooperation with the Japan Exchange Group and financial information vendor QUICK.

Through our discussions, we found that many of these investors had no exposure to Japanese stocks. This is despite having good grasp of Japanese culture and advanced understanding of individual companies.

Japanese is the dominant language in both the publication of analyst information and the disclosure of corporate information, making it difficult for foreign investors to even begin to make investment decisions.

Tools for analyzing Japanese stocks

We have several solutions for those outside the country to understand Japan stocks.

For example, quantitative analysis models such as StarMine and StockReports+ quantify corporate earnings information, price momentum, and textual information to improve the visibility of Japanese stocks, for which there was previously little information.

StarMine has coverage of more than 90 percent of Japanese stocks, with StockReports+ more than 95 percent.

Through our partnership with QUICK, we can deliver real-time news such as market commentary services on Japanese equities and derivatives. Using Eikon’s News Monitor app also means news can easily be translated to local languages around the world.

In the future, we are planning to release the Global Alert app, which provides quick alerts from social media impacting market movements. We will also distribute Corporate Action data. In this way, we will be able close the gap between the enthusiasm of foreign investors in Japanese stocks with their actual exposure to the country.
