Over the last decade, technology has impacted many aspects of our lives, including how we work, socialize, manage our finances and for some, even how they find ‘the one’.

Personally, I still yearn for a commute that involves a jet-pack, or better yet a transporter, but concede these modes of transport may yet become a reality given the exponential pace of technology advances achieved due to the Fourth Industrial Revolution (FIR).

Driven by a combination of disruptive technologies and trends such as the Internet of Things, machine learning, robotics, virtual reality and artificial intelligence, the FIR is already underway.

We may already recognize some of the ramifications in our daily lives, but is it right to assume all advances will drive progress ever forwards?

“The Fourth Industrial Revolution, finally, will change not only what we do but also who we are. It will affect our identity and all the issues associated with it: our sense of privacy, our notions of ownership, our consumption patterns, the time we devote to work and leisure, and how we develop our careers, cultivate our skills, meet people, and nurture relationships.” — Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman, World Economic Forum.

Businesses and governments alike are already struggling to adapt and keep pace with the impact of change, so it comes as no surprise that the focus for this year’s World Economic Forum (WEF) is ‘Globalization 4.0: Shaping a Global Architecture in the Age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution’.

A new global framework

From 22-25 January, 3,000 of the world’s top leaders from all aspects of society will gather in Davos, Switzerland, to discuss and debate the challenges with the ambition of shaping a new framework for global co-operation — one that “enables collaboration for a shared future” and “creates new opportunities for humankind”.

We are no strangers to the WEF. As long-time strategic partners, we debated a range of issues that arose from the GMF’s live coverage of the event last year.

A notable line up of distinguished WEF guests also joined us to share their views on key topics ranging from artificial intelligence in China, to e-commerce, emerging markets, trade and Trumponomics, among many other issues impacting our world today.

The GMF is the world’s first global, macro and cross-asset editorial community moderated by experienced Reuters editors, who provide breaking news and views exclusively to Eikon subscribers or free Eikon Messenger standalone users.
